Hi,
Basically i have a scale model of a submarine connected to a mechanism which opens and closes to reveal a cross section. However at the moment it is hand operated and ideally i would like it to open at the touch of a single button. So i need a motor and some way of rotating it to a point at where it will pause for about 10 seconds and then return to its original position. The model ways 6lbs ish. Any help or direction is much appreciated. Will

Hello Will,

Without knowing more about the mechanical arrangement you have I cannot give you a full answer. No problems with motors, I'm sure we have one that will suit your needs. How you connect to the mechanism is another matter as is how you detect that you reach either the fully open or fully close position to prevent motor stall. To reverse a motor, you would need a DPDT relay with the relay being controlled by a monostable type circuit. How this is implemented could be as simple as a relay with a resistor / capacitor timing circuit or with addition of some transistor logic or even using one of our PICAXE boards. From your description, you may need to detect position of the mechanism although it could be done on time the motor operates.

In summary, yes it can be done quite easily and the final solution depends on your knowledge of electronics.

Well, to be honest my electronic experience is really rather slight. I have not experimented with this degree of circuitry before. I understand the parts and concept but would not no how to arrange a monostable circuit, largely when it comes to buying the correct specification parts. i can supply exact specs of the model if that would start me on the right track. thanks again will

Will,

Okay, can you provide a sketch of what you are looking for mechanically or if you think it would help, a photo of what you have now.
