The SyRen motor driver is one of the most versatile, efficient and easy to use motor drivers on the market. It is suitable for medium powered robots - up to 12kg in combat, 50kg or more for general purpose robotics.

Out of the box, the SyRen 25 can supply a single DC brushed motor with up to 25A continuously. Peak currents of 45A are achievable for a few seconds.

Overcurrent and thermal protection means you'll never have to worry about killing the driver with accidental stalls or by hooking up too big a motor.

With just one SyRen driver you can control a motor with: analog voltage, radio control, serial and packetized serial. You can build many different robots of increasing complexity for years to come with a SyRen. Owning two SyRens allows you to build differential drive (tank style) robots because they can work in tandem with built in mixing.

The operating mode is set with the onboard DIP switches so there are no jumpers to lose. The SyRen features screw terminal connectors - making it possible for you to build a robot without even soldering.

SyRen is the first synchronous regenerative motor driver in its class. The regenerative topology means that your batteries get recharged whenever you command your robot to slow down or reverse. SyRen also allows you to make very fast stops and reverses - giving your robot a quick and nimble edge.

SyRen has a built in 5V BEC that can provide power to a microcontroller or R/C receiver. The lithium cutoff mode allows SyRen to operate safely with lithium ion and lithium polymer battery packs - the highest energy density batteries available.

SyRen's transistors are switched at ultrasonic speeds (32kHz), meaning no one will be able to hear your robot ninja army approaching.

Motors are typically rated at their nominal rating, when a motor is accelerated it draws more current than its nominal rating. Depending on how fast it is accelerated, it may draw up to 8 times its rating. Additionally, motor speed controllers using PWM send pulses of current to the motor which the motor averages out so it thinks it is only getting a dc supply.

These pulses of current come from the power supply although most speed controller have some large capacitors on the input side to help smooth out the pulses. If using a battery supply, then the battery will be able to provide the pulse of current demanded by the speed controller. A suitably rated linear power shoud also be fine at handling the current pulses. However, most low cost power supplies around today are switch mode (SMPS) and these do not have high internal capacitance / speed of response to deliver the current pulses. This is why you can use a battery in parallel with the power supply so as to use the battery to deliver the current pulses and have the power supply keep the battery charged up.

You can certainly use capacitors with a SMPS instead of a battery as long as they are of sufficent capacitance. Personally I would start with 1uF/mA and see how it performs. Beware that a high capacitance across a power supply is a dead short to the supply output until they start to charge up.

If you can use a regulated linear power supply then all the better. Just one further thing to add and that is current regen, that current has to go somewhere and that normally is back to the battery supply which most power supplies will not like."

"Hello. Im looking at powering one of these, and two syren 10s from a 25A 12V switch mode power supply. (it wont be pulling anywhere near that much current).
In the manual it says "6v to 24v power supply (when in parallel with a suitable battery)."
Q1 - is this to prevent problems with the switching of the power supply
Q2 - if so is it possible to use capacitors to even out the signal instead of the battery?
Q3 - if so is there an equation/means of working this out? as i seem to come across this alot.
Q4 - if not can you tell me what values I may need instead.
Q5 - if its nothing to do with SMPS, what is the battery there for, and what is the "suitable" kind?
