Another project designed by Alan Bond of the SRCMBC This module was developed for the control of servo operated guns and cranes mounted on the decks of model boats, but aircraft, military and robotics modellers etc will doubtless find other applications for it. It combines the functionality of an R/C switch, a servo-slower and a servo stretcher in a single unit not much larger than a standard servo. See the video below to see the servo controller in action.

The R/C switch function detects joystick positions either side of a centre deadband and sets the servo moving in the appropriate direction. Releasing the stick (to centre) at any time stops the movement and holds the servo position achieved. The end of travel limits for port and starboard can be individually set by the user. Also, if the servo can cope with being (mechanically) over-driven, the usual +/- 45 degrees of available swing can be extended up to a full +/- 90 degrees, thereby avoiding having to gear up the servo shaft to achieve such an angle of rotation - this solution is also free of the backlash and jerkiness associated with gearing or chain drive. The traverse rate of the servo can be set to take from approximately 2 to 30 seconds from end-to-end (180 degree swing)

The kit is includes all parts, colour assembly booklet including and a programmed PICAXE chip but excludes the optional case. The kit is assembled on stripboard rather than a ready made PCB which helps keep the cost low.

You should find it useful to also refer to the component layout diagram on the last page of the instruction booklet. This shows the transistor middle pin going to row 6, column 6. Just to clarify, none of the transistor legs are in row 4, top leg is R5,C5, middle R6,C6 and lower leg R7,C5"

"hi, I am just assembling this kit and have a question re the transistor. In fig 11 it showes Q1 with the legs in holes 5 across and holes 4 & 6 down, is the center leg fitted to hole5 or 6 across and 5 down. It appears to be hole 6 across and 5 down on the "component side view"

"Phil,

Not sure that I understand your question. Firstly, this servo controller gives out a standard 1-2mS pulse so as long as your ESC is designed to plug direct into a standard RC radio receiver then the servo controller will control the ESC.

A reversing ESC normally has 1.5mS as the neutral position, this servo controller overrides the joystick position and remembers last position as described in the description.

If you can explain what you are trying to do, we may be better able to assist."

"I wish to use your servo kit to control a E.S.C. is it possable to set the off position of the E.S.C. bye letting the joystick rest in its center position so I can use foward & reverse"

"The servo slower takes a standard receiver 1-2mS pulse and slugs it as it changes. How the receiver signal changes relates to the transmitter controls. If your switch is an actual channel then it should work fine.

"Hello, can the kit below be operated by a toggle switch on the TX, I want to slow a standard servo down to operate a set of ramps on the rear of a low loader trailer, they will only be in one of two positions, up or down.

The servo position controller is based around a PICAXE chip that can only be programmed using its own PICAXE BASIC language. The Arduino uses a different processor (Atmel) and a different language 'C'. What aspects were you hoping to 'reprogram'?"

"I have just finished constructing/testing your servo position controller and thought Iâ€™d let you know how pleased I am with it!

I will be using it to deploy/fold the fore planes on a Type XXI submarine and can achieve a nice â€˜scaleâ€™ speed of operation with it.

I belong to the Association of Model Submariners and I will spread the word around as I am sure that there are many other club members who could use this useful piece of kit on their subs if they donâ€™t already know about it.

Raising/lowering the periscopes at scale speeds and to variable heights springs to mind!

Suffice to say I will order another kit for future use and a spare pre-programmed IC.

Many thanks and please let me know if you have/develop any other electronic wizardries!

This servo controller kit appears in two places, here in servo interfaces and in the PICAXE projects section. The null entry for the sound units has now been removed and a picture added for the servo controller. Have a look and see if it has made things clearer. Thanks"

"if you follow the menu to PICAXE projs for eng enthusiasts the only item in its sub-menu is the engine sound KIT which is obviously a null entry now. This item is only found by clicking on the previous menu"
