Hi, Can you recommend a power supply that will power a car bass amp for use with a pa system!
The amp need 13.8v and around 20amps continuos! It has a positive and negative clamps and also a remote clamp to actually turn it on which I assume is a trickle voltage positive only??? but not sure...
The amp is a 'Fly Active Sub with encloser' for your reference! here's a link which might help explain....

Thanks!

Peter,

Apologies for the delay in replying. I'm not sure we can advise about the suitability of a power supply for an audio amplifier. Clearly the power supply needs sufficient power to meet the demands of the amplifer, 13.8V @ 20A gives 276W. Personally I would not use a switch mode power supply for an audio amplifer, the main reason being the lack of output smoothing capacitors and the potential for the power supply not to respond to peak current surges during bass note transients. There is also a risk of interference from the power supply switching frequencies. I'm sure a SMPS can be designed for audio amplifers but ours are for general use. That's not to say they will not work, more that I wouldn't be surprised if the amplifier performance was reduced. Not sure if that helps?

Hi, thanks for the reply and advice!
I am not that technical so please excuse me...

Whats SMPS? 'something, something Power Supply' I'm guessing.

I do understand in that the amp may not run effieciently, but my main amp is only 100w anyway!
I was looking at your power supply '1090-016' and was wondering how I could wire it with a remote lead to turn it on?

I do apprecitate your help, knowing the nature of the questions!

Thanks!

Peter,

SMPS = switch mode power supply which all of ours are. This compares to the larger linear power supply which we do not stock.

There is no way of remotely switching our power supplies other than by directly switching the mains on/off. Is your amp 100W RMS and is it mono or stereo?

Hi, thanks... makes sense now, SMPS !

the amp is 300w rms... with low level rca connectors for both L and R... and high level speaker clamps again both L and R... but I think it gives out mono...
There is a link at the top on my first post if its any help with a pdf instuction guide... think you need the one stating 'loaded 250 user manual' that has a little spec info on there!

Thanks for your replies :-)

Peter,

Sorry but can't see much spec there but they are only mono. As you will see they have a peak power output of 1000W which whilst will only occur for short periods still need to be provided for max performance. Even 300W rms still needs 22A of power supply. I still cannot recommend any of our power supplies including the 40A version we stock as we have no experience of them in audio applications. They are most commonly used for radio transmitters and for powering battery chargers etc. Sorry we cannot help.

Regards

Paul

Ok, thanks for help, I appreciate your time!
Its all alittle confusing... think I should run it from a car battery, but cant really see that working to well either! Perhaps I think its best to sell!

thanks once again!
